Roman Kochanowski, one of the most significant Polish landscape painters of the Munich School, devoted his life to depicting rural idylls and atmospheric landscapes. This small-format work captivates with its delicate, impressionistic brushwork and subtle use of light, which masterfully captures the vast, cloud-covered sky above the lowlands. The figures—a farmer and a farmer’s wife working in the fields—are harmoniously embedded in nature, a characteristic feature of Kochanowski’s late work and his deep connection to rural motifs. Oba przedstawione tu obrazki, “Wieśniacy na polu” oraz “Ścieżka na skraju wsi z postaciami“, malowane na niewielkich deseczkach, doskonale obrazują stosunkow późny okres w karierze Romana Kochanowskiego. 

Ewolucja artysty, która nastąpiła w stronę kameralnej, niemal szkicowej formy z rozległym, dominującym niebem, nisko poprowadzoną linią horyzontu i drobnymi sylwetkami wieśniaków wtopionymi w krajobraz jest właśnie znakiem rozpoznawczym dojrzałego, późnego okresu twórczości Kochanowskiego. Oba obrazy, pozbawione warstwy anegdotycznej, odznaczają się harmonią koloru i pełnym liryzmu nastrojem, gdzie prawdziwym ‘bohaterem’ jest niebo i światło, a nie postaci ludzkie, sprowadzone niemal do roli sztafażu ożywiającego pusty krajobraz, prawdopodobnie z okolic Monachium.  Mając opcję, subiektywnie wybrałbym olej przedstawiający pracę w polu dwojga wieśniaków.

This small-format panel painting is in very good, collectible original condition. The paint layer is stable and displays the artist’s characteristic impasto in the meadow landscape. On the reverse is a label from Galerie Bubenik, Munich, as well as a frame label “weber,” Stuttgart. Framed in a profiled, gilded wooden frame. H x W: 13/20 cm.

Roman Kochanowski, a leading representative of the Polish Munich School, devoted his later work primarily to intimate landscape depictions. This work captivates with its atmospheric play of light beneath a vast, cloud-covered sky. With a confident, almost Impressionist brushstroke, Kochanowski captures the tranquility of the countryside, while the subtly placed figures and architectural accents create the sense of depth characteristic of his style.
