France – Great pipe marshal Poniatowski – 1850
Józef Antoni prince Poniatowski (1763 – 1813) was a Polish general, marshal of France and national hero.
After the Prussian defeat, Napoleon appointed Poniatowski minister of war in 1807
In the Russian campaign of 1812, he led the Fifth Army Corps, fought in the battles of Smolensk and Borodino, and travelled into Moscow on 15 September 1812 with Napoleon. After the disastrous retreat, he formed a new army. He was brave in the battle of the Nations of Leipzig (1813), which gave him the title Marshal of France. While covering the retreat, he was injured and drowned in the Elster.

Our drawing is undoubtedly a study for The Entry of the Polish Ambassador to Rome in 1633, one of the first engravings made upon his arrival in Rome by Stefano della Bella. This is a major work in the artist’s career both in terms of importance and size. The engraving consists of six leaves accompanied by an explanatory caption and a dedication to Lorenzo de Medici.
The Louvre has a preparatory overall drawing on four leaves, (see F. Viatte, Inventaire général des dessins italiens II, dessins de Stefano della Bella 1610 – 1664, Paris 1974, no. 12, reproduced).
There are many drawings of horsemen and cavalcades that can be related to this engraving without della Bella necessarily having used them in the realization of her final work. The large drawing in the Louvre thus presents important variants with the engraving. The small studies could also be used in the views of Rome that Stefano della Bella later produced. In any case, all these drawings were executed by della Bella according to his habit on the spot as a spectator of the event. The account of this entry was published in Rome in 1633 by Paolo Masotti, but the engraving does not illustrate it. Prince Jerzy Ossolinski entered Rome on 27 November 1633 as envoy of the Polish King Ladislaus IV to Pope Urban VIII. The purpose of his important cortege was to pay tribute to the Pope, the new King of Poland having been elected the previous year, to settle certain political issues, but also to create a spectacular image of Poland intended to impress its European neighbours. Przedstawiam portret Tadeusza Kościuszki, wyrzeźbiony z kości słoniowej. Mało przypomina Naczelnika z portretów do jakich przywykliśmy, tj. z zadartym nosem, jakie możemy oglądać na licznych polskich portretach oraz za mosiężnej dziesięciozłotówce z czasów PRL-u. Portret z nadchodzącej aukcji jest szczególnie mało podobny i gdyby nie wyrzeźbiony napis KOSZIUSKO mało kto spodziewałby się, że jest generał. Prawdopodobnie, portret wykonał cudzoziemiec na specjalne zamówienie kogoś kto słyszał o Naczelniku, nie widział go nigdy, był do pewnego stopnia zafascynowany jego życiorysem. Wartość podobnych prac (już jednego Kościuszkę w kości słoniowej prezentowalem wczesniej w tym dziale) jest teraz sentymentalna i emocjonalna. W zasadzie nie jest ważne jak wyglądał Kościuszko a ważne jest, że ktoś go bardzo szanował. Nie wstydziłbym sie zakupu bo to jest spora ciekawostka. Jest to wdzięczy temat do rozmów z osobami znającymi się i nie znającymi się na sztuce. Tadeusza Kosciuszkę każdy przecież zna i dobrze wie jak wyglądał!
Josef Kriehuber, austriacki i dość drogi w sumie malarz, malował na początku swoejej kariery na terenie Galicji i w tym czasie powstala ta praca. Brakuje nazwiska pary sportretowanej, najprawdopodobnie polskiej pary tj. Marii i Józefa Zachariasza NN. Próbowałem dowiedzieć się od Hampla czegoś więcej lecz moje pytanie ‘olali’. Pani Maria została sportretowana bardzo dobrze, natomiast jej mąż wyglada drętwo i nie patrzy wcale na piękną żonę.

In finely chiselled ormolu frame with green leather coat behind edge-cut glass. In a grisaille-technique intimated interior at a table with springlike tablecloth the young couple sitting in early Biedermeier clothes. While single portraits are more common in the work of the native Viennese, one only rarely encounters such double portraits, especially with spatial orientation. Since Kriehuber accompanied Prince Sanguszko of Slawuta to Poland as a drawing teacher in 1818 and only returned to Vienna in 1821, it can be assumed that the miniature at hand was created during his journey. Ciekawy polonik z okresu panowania polskich królów, przedstawiający moment zaślubienia Zygmunta IV Wazy (per procura) z Marią Gonzagą de Nevers w 25 wrzesnia 1645 roku w Fontainebleau. Polskiego króla reprezentował wtedy jego młodszy brat Jan Kazimierz. Królowa po przyjeździe do polski zmienila imię na Ludwika. W katalogu nie sa podane wymiary tego miedzirytu(?). Warto zauważyć, że stan tej pracy jest doprawdę dziewiczy, nawet nie zostały umieszczone w kartuszu żadne napisy/wyjaśnienia z opisem.

Portret Tadeusza Kościuszki wykonany w kości słoniowej był przedmiotem aukcji w Danii. Gdyby nie to wyrzeźbione nazwisko Naczelnika, choć mocno zniekształcone, to trudno po wyglądzie nosa szukać podobieństwa do portretowanego. Dowiedziałem się od zwycięzcy aukcji, że ‘Naczelnik wraca do domu’. Gratulacje!

Spora ciekawostka. Obligacja banku hiszpańskiego z 1933 roku z wizerunkiem akwareli wykonanej przez Juliusza Kossaka, datowanej (1878 r) o wartości 50 pesetos. Praca Kossaka przedstawia fragment jednej z bitew z tzw. (po angielsku) Carlist War, jednej z trzech wojen o tron Hiszpanii w XIX wieku. Historia tych trzech wojen jest zupełnie mi nieznana. Druk obligacji jest sporego formatu (59 x 51 cm) i zapewnie praca Kossaka jest nieźle tam odwzorowana. Uważam, że może być to znakomita forma dekoracji ściennej w oprawie zamiast marnego plakatu a w dodatku jakiż to element do dyskusji, gdy zbierze się towarzystwo.
Sporo osób zbiera stare obligacje a tu w dodatku super polonik!

Rosyjski plakat pokazujący bestialstwa wojsk niemieckich w Kaliszu w sierpniu 1914 roku. Miasto zostało zupełnie zniszczone a wielu bezbronnych mieszkańców zostało rozstrzelanych przez regularne wojska niemieckie. To był dopiero poczatek I wojny światowej.

Geboren als Sohn eines französischen Malers und Illustrators in Paris, entschied sich Georges Bertin Scott, beruflich in die Fussstapfen des Vaters zu treten. In der Folge studierte er an der École des Beaux-Arts und wurde Schüler des Militärmalers Édouard Detaille. Ab 1892 arbeitete er als Korrespondent und Illustrator für das französische Magazin “L’Illustration”. Einsatz fand er vor allem als Kriegskorrespondent in den Balkankriegen Anfang der 1910er Jahre und in den beiden Weltkriegen. In seinen Skizzen und Gemälden vermittelte Scott einerseits die gnadenlose Härte auf den Schlachtfeldern, anderseits eine patriotische Verklärung des Kriegswesens zu Gunsten des französischen Soldaten. Neben der Kriegsillustration fertigte er auch historische Kriegsgenreszenen und Reiterporträts bedeutender Persönlichkeiten an, darunter Konstantin I. von Griechenland, König Georg V. von England und Benito Mussolini.
Beim dargestellten Soldaten handelt es sich um einen Angehörigen der “Lanciers polonais”, einer Kavallerieeinheit der kaiserlich-französischen Armee unter Napoleon I. Die Garde aus polnischen Adeligen war von 1807 bis Ende des Kaiserreiches 1815 dem französischen. Estimate 14,000 CHF. Dobiaschofsky. 11/06-11/19
