Alfred Wierusz-Kowalski (1849–1915) is regarded as one of the leading Polish painters of the nineteenth century. Born in Poland, he received his artistic training in Warsaw, Dresden and Prague before enrolling at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich in 1873. There he studied under Józef Brandt, joined the Polish artistic circle in Munich, and emerged as a prominent representative of the Munich School. Renowned particularly for its landscape and genre painting, orientalist scenes rarely appear on the auction market (for another example see: Sopocki Dom Aukcyjny, 13 May 2023, lot 1). This painting should be dated after 1903, when the artist travelled to Morocco and Algeria, responding to the widespread enthusiasm for Orientalism that permeated European culture at the turn of the twentieth century. This fascination was institutionalized by the establishment of the Société des Peintres Orientalistes Français in Paris in 1893, which actively promoted both Orientalist subject matter and artistic travel to North Africa and the Near East.
