Lot 201. 18TH C. MINIATURE PORTRAIT OF MARIE LOUISE GONZAGA, QUEEN OF POLAND. Watercolor and gouache, the young Queen depicted with curled hair wearing a crown and string of pearls. Her bright blue dress adorned with drop pearls, ribbon and emerald pins, and her purple fleur-de-lis embroidered cape decorated with pearl, ruby, and emeralds and, most notably, lined with ermine fur, calling attention to her royal status, 3 5/8” x 2 7/8”, brass and enamel frame 5 3/8” x 3 5/8”. Marie Louise Gonzaga (1611-1667) was the Queen of Poland and Grand Duchess of Lithuania. A dominant force who remained active in Commonwealth politics, she was a strong supporter of the monarchy and religious persecution, making her a polarizing figure as well one of the most powerful and influential queens of Poland.
