Malowała głównie portrety oraz kwiatowe martwe natury. W Polsce znalazłem jedynie pięć jej prac na aukcjach w ostatnich 30 latach. Może tekst poniżej wyjaśni trochę dlaczego tak malo jest o niej wiadomości (należy szukać pod nazwiskiem Hedda Stoffrengen). Słownik Atystów Polskich całkowicie pomija tę artystkę! Rok temu we Francji pojawiło się sporo jej prac na aukcji; w większości były to porterty. Scena rodzajowa z obecnej aukcji o tytule ‘Modlitwa’ przedstawia postać zamarzniętej lub bliskiej zamarznięcia kobiety leżącej na ośnieżonym cmentarzu. Obraz cieszył się umiarkowanym powodzeniem i sprzedano go za 1,500 euro.
It is hard to find this artist in biographical dictionaries, unless you know her other name Hedda Stoffrengen. This painter, now forgotten, had his heyday at the beginning of the 20th century. Despite her name and place of birth, she spent her youth in Warsaw, before leaving for Paris to study at the Académie Julian under Jules Lefebvre and Tony Robert-Fleury. She won prizes at the Salon of 1899 and at the Universal Exhibition in 1900, and also exhibited with the Society of Polish Artists. Jadwiga Matawowska became known for her portraits of high society, including, for example, those of Empress Alexandra Fedorovna, Queen Elisabeth and Albert I of Belgium. She also painted symbolist scenes. She spent the last part of her life in Woluwe Saint-Pierre, a residential suburb of Brussels, in a modernist villa of 1926 that she had commissioned jointly with a certain Teresa Szlenker.

Stosunkowo rzadki malarz na rynku. Kolejna ofiara Niemców w czasie II wojny światowej.

From 1912 he studied with the symbolist painter Jacek Malczewski at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow and probably in Paris. Very soon he got close to the very active milieu of artists in the city of Lodz and joined the Society of Artists and Art Lovers “Start”. He exhibited in various Polish cities, often with Jewish art associations. Between 1927 and 1935 he visited France several times, in Paris and in the South of France. Hirszwang’s oils are relatively rare, his preferred means of expression being watercolour. His style remains variable: one finds in his paintings “traces” of Cézanne, compositions constructed with energetic colour patches, but also more classical paintings that can be assimilated to the “call to order” of the 1920s. Dwie trochę odbiegające prace Eleszkiewicza od jego większości. Autorzy katalogu sugerują, że malarz sugerował się rosyjskim dzwonem Kołolołem. Myślę jednak, że ta praca o dwuznacznej tematyce to parabola odnosząca sie do francuskiej knajpy ‘Pod dzwonem’, gdzie przysiedli dwaj spragnieni mężczyźni i nie ma nic wspólnego z Moskwą. Podziwiam fantazjęi znajomość Francuzów historią dzwonów rosyjskich.

This Ukrainian-born artist of Polish parents settled in Paris in 1923 after having passed through Warsaw, Ahanes and Rome. In the years 1927-1945 he draws for the glass mosaic painter Jean Gaudin. He exhibited in the galleries of Montparnasse and other galleries next to Dufy, Modigliani, Utrillo and Vlaminck. Yet he remains for a long time a forgotten artist of the École de Paris. The expressionism of his canvases, in which he mostly depicts dark alleys and figures of the marginalized, make him one of the most personal artists of this school.
One wonders about the meaning of this mysterious and grotesque composition. Was it inspired by the story of the world’s largest bell – Tsar Kolokol in the Kremlin, which weighs more than 20 tons?
