Mojżesz (Moise) Kisling (1891 – 1953)

Mojżesz (Moise) Kisling. Mariane, 1930

Lot 41. MOÏSE KISLING (1891-1953). Mariane, signed ‘Kisling’ (upper right), oil on canvas, 41.3 x 27.6cm (16 1/4 x 10 7/8in). Painted in 1930. The authenticity of this work has kindly been confirmed by Monsieur Marc Ottavi and Monsieur Jean Kisling. This work will be included in the forthcoming Volume IV et Additifs aux Tomes I, II et III of the Moïse Kisling catalogue raisonné currently being prepared. Provenance: Anon. sale, Christie’s, New York, 6 November 2013, lot 368. Acquired at the above sale by the present owner. Sold for £ 68,812 (US$ 92,675) inc. premium. Bonhams. 10/15/20

(Moving shapes), c. 1940s. Ink on paper, signed in pencil ‘W. Strz’ (lower left); framed under passe-partout behind glass. Unexamined out of the frame, corners very slightly bumped, some light handling creases, else apparently in excellent condition.

  • Notes: “Wladyslaw Strzeminski, the pioneer and the main representative of the Constructivist movement in Poland was a painter, theoretician and organizer of artistic life. He was an artist who made a highly original, and major contribution to twentieth century art. His work is an essential element and of enduring value in the panorama of the world avant-garde. […] During the war he produced a few other cycles of drawings, such as: Deportations, War Against Homes, Faces, Cheap as Mud, Hands which are not with us, and a series To My Friends the Jews, consisting of collages. The drawings of these cycles were based on the use of contour motifs, partly repeated and interlaced (with the patterns produced on tracing paper), which built the representation of the Drama of the time” (Jedlinski, Jaromir. To Construct Seeing. In: Władysław Strzemiński, 1893-1952: on the 100th anniversary of his birth. Łódź, Muzeum Sztuki, 1994). In the drawing offered here we see contours of a small human figure next to a large dissolving shape on the right. With several sharp lines Władysław Strzemiński draws what seems to resemble a tiny human shrunk under the threat of two enormous army boots – the suffocating feeling of dread brought by World War II.
  • Provenance: Private collection; Galerie Gmurzynska + Bargera, Cologne, 1972
  • Dimensions: Paper size 24.5 x 34 cm., frame size 46 x 54 cm.
  • Artist Name: STRZEMIŃSKI, Władysław (Polish 1893 – 1952).
  • Exhibited: ‘Konstruktivismus: Entwicklungen und Tendenzen seit 1913’, Galerie Gmurzynska + Bargera, Cologne, 1972

Estimate: €10,000 – €15,000. Adams Amsterdam. 12/14/20. (201400019)
