An expression of exasperation adorns Sonia, the subject of Moïse Kisling’s portrait of the same name. Wrapped in an ornate shawl with a gold bracelet and white gloves, it is clear that this woman is of high status. Executed in a more realistic manner than the surreal depictions of female nudes for which the artist is noted, this work highlights the artist’s technical skill as a printmaker, rich with color and detail.

Executed circa 1925, this color aquatint and engraving is signed and numbered six from an edition of one hundred. With full margins and deckled edges, the plate measures 23 ½ x 17 ½ inches. In overall good condition with minor handling soiling and toning in margins, not affecting the image.

Moïse Kisling (French, 1891-1953)

Born as Mojżesz Kisling in the then Austro-Hungarian Kraków, Moïse Kisling studied at the School of Fine Arts in his hometown until he was encouraged to move to Paris to continue his training. After moving in 1910, Kisling was awarded French citizenship after becoming wounded in 1915 during service with the French Foreign Legion. He became close friends with leading artists like Amedeo Modigliani and painted in an amalgamated style of various Parisian movements while gaining recognition for his surreal depictions of the female nudes. Kisling immigrated to the United States during World War II where he exhibited in New York and Washington D.C. until the end of the war. A large collection of his works is held in private collection with others found at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and Geneva Musée du Petit Palais.

Wojciech Kossak (1857 – 1942)
