In the 1930s, Arthur Szyk began working on an epic series of artworks celebrating Latin American independence leader Simón Bolívar. In 1952, the Pan American Union in Washington, D.C., held a posthumous exhibition of these artworks “Simon Bolivar and His Time: 51 Miniatures.” The brochure from the exhibition is not illustrated, but this is thought to have been one of the works displayed as part of the show. Bolívar, often called the George Washington of South America, was a long-standing hero of Szyk, whose deeply political art reflected his personal commitment to freedom and self-determination worldwide.

Miniaturowy portret Simóna Bolívara autorstwa Arthura Szyka to pokaz mistrzowskiej precyzji, w której niewielki format nie ograniczył bogactwa szczegółów, lecz stał się próbą technicznej doskonałości. Artysta z niezwykłą starannością opracował hafty munduru, złote epolety, odznaczenia i ornamenty dekoracyjnej bordiury, zachowując zarazem czytelność całej kompozycji.
