Charles Malankiewicz, also known as Karol Malankiewicz (1802–1877), a Polish painter living in France, led a life closely tied to his country’s military history. As an officer in the Polish army, he took part in the November Uprising of 1830 against Russia, notably in the Battle of Ostrołęka in 1831, before going into exile. In Paris, he continued his training under Antoine-Jean Gros, Paul Delaroche, and Horace Vernet, focusing on battle scenes and military subjects. An exhibitor at the Paris Salon between 1840 and 1868, he created, among other works, a major depiction of the Battle of Ostrołęka, now housed at the Ostrołęka Museum in Poland.
