Cztery oleje Henryka Gotliba w UK. Trudno przywyknąć do takiej deformacji i takiego patrzenia na kobietę i może dlatego tak niełatwe malarstwo nie jest generalnie dobrze przyjęte na polskim rynku. Jest jednak w czym wybierać na rynku brytyjskim i można odleźć taką pracę jak najbardziej pasuje naszej estetyce.
Lot 24. Henryk Gotlib, British/Polish 1890–1966 – Lady on Sofa, 1951; oil on canvas, signed lower right, 70 x 93 cm (ARR) Provenance: Boundary Gallery, London Note: with thanks to Agi Katz for her assistance with the cataloguing of this work. Gotlib studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow, followed by the Kunstgewerbeschule in Vienna, and the Munich Academy of Fine Arts, where he was taught by the artist Angelo Jank. He was a key member of the Formist movement in Poland, which rejected the seemingly restrictive standards of Realism, still very much dominant in early twentieth-century Polish art, in favour of an expressionism which was heavily influenced by figures such as Egon Schiele and Max Beckmann. The looser, more fluid application of paint which defined Gotlib’s best works are strikingly evident in these pieces, which therefore serve as excellent examples of his style and approach. Works by Gotlib are in a number of prominent collections, including those of the National Portrait Gallery, the Tate Gallery, and the Courtauld Gallery in London, the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, and the National Museum of Wales in Cardiff, among others.
