Henryk Gotlib. Two standing figures

Lot 119. Henryk Gotlib, British/Polish 1890–1966 – Two standing figures; oil on canvas, signed lower left ‘Gotlib’, 61.2 x 50.9 cm (ARR) Provenance: Bonhams, London, Works from the Studio of Henryk Gotlib, 22nd October 1991; private collection Note: Gotlib was a key member of the Formist movement in Poland, which rejected the seemingly restrictive standards of Realism, still very much dominant in early twentieth-century Polish art, in favour of an expressionism which was heavily influenced by figures such as Egon Schiele and Max Beckmann. The looser, more fluid application of paint which defined Gotlib’s best works are strikingly evident in this piece. Works by Gotlib are in a number of prominent collections, including those of the National Portrait Gallery, the Tate Gallery, and the Courtauld Gallery in London, the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, and the National Museum of Wales in Cardiff, among others. Estimate £800 – £1,200. Roseberys. 05/25/22

Estimate 3,000 – 5,000 GBP. Roseberys. 10/13/21. Not sold

Cztery oleje Henryka Gotliba w UK.

Henryk Gotlib. Lady on Sofa, 1951

Lot 24. Henryk Gotlib, British/Polish 1890–1966 – Lady on Sofa, 1951; oil on canvas, signed lower right, 70 x 93 cm (ARR) Provenance: Boundary Gallery, London Note: with thanks to Agi Katz for her assistance with the cataloguing of this work. Gotlib studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow, followed by the Kunstgewerbeschule in Vienna, and the Munich Academy of Fine Arts, where he was taught by the artist Angelo Jank. He was a key member of the Formist movement in Poland, which rejected the seemingly restrictive standards of Realism, still very much dominant in early twentieth-century Polish art, in favour of an expressionism which was heavily influenced by figures such as Egon Schiele and Max Beckmann. The looser, more fluid application of paint which defined Gotlib’s best works are strikingly evident in these pieces, which therefore serve as excellent examples of his style and approach. Works by Gotlib are in a number of prominent collections, including those of the National Portrait Gallery, the Tate Gallery, and the Courtauld Gallery in London, the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, and the National Museum of Wales in Cardiff, among others. Estimate 3,500 – 4,500 GBP. Roseberys. 10/13/21. Not sold

Henryk Gotlib. Couple at a farm gate

Born in Krakow in 1890, Henryk Gotlib studied at the Krakow Academy of Fine Art and then in Vienna, Munich and Paris before the First World War. His first solo show was in Warsaw (1918). He became the leader of the Polish avant-garde ‘Formist’ movement, exhibiting in Berlin, Amsterdam and Paris, and was an influential writer and teacher in Poland. In 1939 he was forced into exile and settled in Britain, exhibiting with the London Group. His work, principally in figure painting, represents an important element in the development of British modern art. painting and sculpture: the assimilation of European trends and the invigoration of British art influenced by the Central European diaspora under Communism and Nazism. Estimate 1,500 – 2,000 euro. Hermitage Fine Art. 06/17/21. Sold 1,500 euro

Henryk Gotlib. A Seated Lady Holding a Cup

Lot 178. Henryk Gotlib (1892-1966) Polish. A Seated Lady Holding a Cup. Watercolour, 14” x 11” (35.5 x 28cm). Estimate 600 – 800 GBP. Parker Fine Art. 05/13/21

Henryk Gotlib. Clouds Over Fields, 1956
