Stanislaw II August Poniatowski, born Stanislaw Antoni Poniatowski in 1732, was the brother of Andrzej Poniatowski, whose portrait we are presenting under lot number 191. When their father died, it was Stanislaw Antoni Poniatowski who took the titles of King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania. Continuing with tradition, Stanislaus II Augustus acted as a protector of painters. Deeply interested in literature and art, he regularly attended Madame de Geoffrin’s salon and presided in his own right over gatherings to which intellectuals passing through Warsaw were invited. For his gallery, he commissioned his favourite artists, including the Italians Bacciarelli (one of whose portraits, from his own collection, is in this sale – see next lot) and Grassi, as well as the Swedish painter Krafft.
The size of his personal collection, to which he added continuously during his thirty-one year reign, can be appreciated from several inventories. One of the eighteenth century’s most important collections of paintings, it comprised almost 2,500 works, distributed among his various residences. Most of the paintings were sold when he abdicated in 1795 and are now in private hands or in museums around the world.
The present painting reprises a composition by Bacciarelli: the original is in the museum in Toruń, in Poland. Engraved by Johann Friedrich Bolt (see National Museum of Krakow; inv. MNK III-ryc.-50416), it was copied many times: among other examples, it can be found in a miniature in the Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg (inv. ЭРР-4088).
The king is shown here with the blue sash and medal of the Order of the White Eagle on his breast; around his neck he wears the cross of the Order of the Black Eagle.

Portret Stanisława Augusta Poniatowskiego, atrybucja ręki Marcellego Bacciarelliego. Wydaje mi się, że NM w Warszawie posiada inną replikę (chyba nie oryginał?) lecz mogę sie mylić, może nawet gorszą replikę. Kupując ten obraz otrzymamy w prezencie drugi, czyli portret księżnej Elisabeth of Württemberg (1767 – 1790), w identycznej ramie i chyba tych samych rozmiarów.

Pittore di Sua Maestà Stanislao Augusto, Re di Polonia, Bacciarelli visse e operò in Polonia per quasi mezzo secolo e svolse un ruolo importante per la pittura polacca dell’epoca. Formatosi con Marco Benefial a Roma, il pittore nel 1753 si trasferì a Dresda fino al 1756, quando a causa della Guerra dei sette anni la corte si trasferì a Varsavia. BACCIARELLI, Fryderyka Johanna Julianna ur. Richter (1733 Drezno – 1809 Warszawa). Miniaturzystka i pastelistka, uczyła się w Dreźnie u Charlesa Hutina, potem u M. Bacciarellego, którego poślubiła 1755. Od 1753 pracuje dla dworu drezdeńskiego, przenosi się do Warszawy 1756. Otrzymuje tytuł malarki nadwornej 1759, 1764 zostaje członkiem (“academicienne agregée”) Akademii Sztuk Pięknych w Dreźnie. W tym samym roku udaje się z mężem do Wiednia aby wykonywać kopie obrazów w miniaturze na zlecenie małżonki elektora, tamże otrzymali nominację na członków honorowych Akademii, razem powracają na stałe do Warszawy w 1766. Artystka rzadko sygnowała swoje dzieła i są one jej przypisywane na podstawie tradycji. Cierpiała na ciężką chorobę, ale i tak wykształciła wielu uczniów, którzy stworzyli polską szkołę malowania miniatur (W. Lesseur, J. Kosiński, Fr. Olexiński, St. Marszałkiewicz). Jej córka Anna (1770-1818) też została miniaturzystką. STANISŁAW AUGUST PONIATOWSKI, król Polski (1732 Wołczyn – 1796 Grodno) Syn Stanisława i Konstancji z Czartoryskich. Portret Stanisława Augusta Poniatowskiego siedzącego w fotelu z ciemnoczerwonym obiciem. Widoczny do kolan. Frak barwy fioletowej, Na głowie ciemna peruka z katoganem, u szyi biały kołnierzyk, fular i koronkowy żabot. Frak barwy złamanego fioletu, na który narzucono czerwony płaszcz królewski obszyty gronostajami. Po lewej stronie leży na biurku czerwona poduszka, a na niej korona królewska. W głębi po prawej szaro-zielona podpięta kotara. Tło ciemobrązowe. Uwaga: owal z popiersiem króla wykonany gwaszem na kości wklejony został w prostokąt pergaminu, na którym domalowano całość kompozycji identyczną techniką i barwami. Oprawa wtórna; otok wgłębiony z mosiądzu złoconego z motywem stylizowanej plecionki. Bardzo ciekawa miniatura, składa się z dwóch części: owalnej z portretem króla wykonanym na kości słoniowej (może nawet przez samą Fryderykę Bacciarelli), a która została doklejona do prostokątnego tła na podłożu pergaminowym, namalowanego przez innego artystę. Duża atrakcja dla kolekcjonerów miniatur. Portret Magdaleny Agnieszki Sapieżyny (1739-1780) z kolekcji ostatniego polskiego króla, Stanisława Augusta Poniatowskiego. Trudno o lepszą proweniencję od zaprezentowanej w katalogu aukcyjnym. Sądząc po jakosci portretu, artysta był przedniej marki, choć miniatura nie jest sygnowana. Cena atrakcyjna biorąc pod uwagę do kogo należała w przeszłości. Jednak…szansę widzę małą by zakupu dokonał zwykly śmiertelnik-kolekcjoner. Około dwa lata temu pojawiło się kilka miniatur również z kolekcji Stanisława Augusta lecz ‘spadły’ z rynku na skutek zakulisowych negocjacji polskich muzeów. Tak może być i w tym przypadku, chyba, że polska strona, na skutek niedowładu biurokratycznego, nie zdąży wynegocjować ceny kupna. Myślę, że jednak MKiDZN wykupi tę pracę bo to bedzie dobry PR do gazet. Trzeba jednak obserwować bo kto wie.

Trzecią z pamiątek związaną z osobą ostatniego polskiego króla Stanisława Augusta Poniatowskiego, wystawioną na aukcji francuskiego Delorme & Collin du Bocage w dniu 2 grudnia 2013, jest maleńki portret z profilu króla we szkle wykonany przez Romain Vincent Jeuffroy około 1792 roku. INTAILLE AU PORTRAIT DU ROI STANISLAS AUGUSTE II DE POLOGNE Le roi est figuré de profil, un diadème posé sur ses cheveux ondulés, à la Mithridate, roi du Pont, mais dans une pose qui rappelle une iconographie existant déjà en 1766. Signé JEUFFROY VARSOVIE 1792 Verre Haut.: 2,92 cm – Larg.: 2,5 cm Belle intaille à rapprocher de celle exécutée par Romain Vincent Jeuffroy en 1792. On sait que le roi Stanislas Auguste de Pologne commanda son portrait en intaille à Jeuffroy, comme en témoigne une note en date du 17 janvier 1792 dans un de ses carnets de dépenses: « payer Goeffroy la bague de mon portrait [..] ».(1) La Fondation Ciechanowieck au château royal de Varsovie conserve une intaille identique monté sur une bague.
