Miniature portrait of the Queen of France of great pictorial quality. Our work depicts Maria Leszczynska (1703-1768) in full view, seated in a sumptuous dress. The interior surrounding it is also luxurious in the decoration of furniture, fabrics and carpet and serves to represent the status of wife of the King of France Louis XV (1710-1774). The sumptuous crown and a book in a leather binding, both draped on the table in the left part of the depiction, are interesting and significant. The meaning behind the crown refers to Leszczynska’s rank alongside one of the most powerful monarchs in Europe, the book can be interpreted as a symbol of her spiritual erudition. In her left hand, the queen holds a fan, which, although closed, reveals its rich ornamentation. Overall, the portrait must have served the purpose of representation and demonstration of power, in order to guide the queen’s outward image. Leszczynska came from the Polish royal family and was considered the ideal candidate for marriage to the Duke of Bourbon, pretender to the French royal throne. The marriage was marked by mutual respect, but not love, and produced 10 children. In keeping with the genre of miniature painting, our portrait is on a leg. For the colour, gouache was used, especially in France, in very fine touches, which obtained their covering luminosity by successive layers.
In keeping with the genre of miniature painting, our portrait is done on bone, which was considered an ideal surface for painting. Gouache was used for color, especially in France, in delicate washes that were applied in layers to achieve their opaque luminance. Estimate 400 euro. Jeschke. 09/01/24
