Jan-Wacław Zawadowski, also known as ZAWADO, was born in Volhynia, Congress Poland in 1891. Zawado studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow from 1910-12, after which he moved to Paris on the advice of his teacher. Following a short stay at the artist residence “La Ruche”, he moved to Montmartre, where he soon became part of the artistic community in Montparnasse and associated with several of the great modernists of his time, including Fernand Leger, Robert Delaunay, and Marc Chagall.

During the war years, Zawado stayed in Spain, mainly in Madrid, but was able to return to Paris after the end of the war in 1919. Zawado had strong ties to the prominent art dealer Leopold Zborowski, and it was through him that he became acquainted with Amedeo Modigliani. After Modigliani’s passing in 1920, Zawado took over his studio and, on Zborowski’s advice, adopted the pseudonym “Zawado” in connection with the move.

In 1928, he joined the Circle of Polish Artists in Paris, and during the 1920s and 1930s, he participated actively in the artistic life surrounding the first School of Paris. He exhibited in Poland, Paris, and London. In 1930, he began spending longer periods in Aix-en-Provence, and in 1938, he became director of the Polish Institute of Fine Arts in Paris.
In 1945, he settled permanently in Aix-en-Provence but kept his studio in Paris, continuing to participate in exhibitions until his death in 1982 in Provence.
