Jest to moim zdaniem jedna z lepszych prac Goldberga, malowana w okresie jego pobytu w Izraelu dokąd wyemigrował z Polski po wojnie. Jego prace późniejsze, te USA, są już dużo słabsze, sztuczne, pozbawione ładunku emocjonalnego. Chyba lepiej by było gdyby pozostał i tworzył w Izraelu a nie szukał sławy w Ameryce, gdzie chyba uwiądł artystycznie. Jeśli nawet ta praca podoba mi się to i tak jak też w przypadku większości innych jego prac, widzę coś z Chaglla czyli w sumie zapożyczenia i obrabiany ‘na swoje kopyto’ temat.

Rysunek Orłowskiego z roku 1816. Śmiesznie niska cena estymacyjna wynika prawdopodobnie z obecności tzw ‘foxing’ czyli zbrązowiałych nalotów na papierze spowodowanych mikroorganizmami. Te zbrązowienia można jednak stosunkowo łatwo usunąć i w ten sposób uratować tę pracę.

Kilka niezłych poloników zostało niedawno wystawionych na aukcji w Litwie i tam przepadły niesprzedane. Zostały jednak wycenione zbyt wysoko. Przykładem na to jest portret cyganki Kazimierza alchimowicza z wyceną ok 13 tys euro. Praca ta wystawioną była w okresie międzywojennym w Muzeum Wielkopolskim a mimo to spadła z aukcji. Litwini nie potrafią wyceniać poloników lub celowo wyceniają tak wysoko by spadły z aukcji. Praca pewnie nadal czeka na klienta.

Polski pawilon przygotowany był z wielką starannością na Światową Wystawę w 1939 roku jaka miała miejsce w Nowym Yorku. Szereg polskich artystów specjalnie przyjechało w tym celu do USA i dekorowało pawilon na miejscu. Niejednemu z nich ten przyjazd zapewnie uratował życie. Pozostał po tym pawilonie dość gruby katalog z ilustracjami i opisami osiągnięć Polski jaka wkrótce przestała istnieć, zagrabiona i zniszczona przez niemieckich i sowieckich bandytów. Pozostał też na pamiątkę ten rzadki już plakat.

New York World’s Fair Travel Poster (1939). Poster (27″ X 39″) “Polish Pavilion.” A gorgeous homage to the proud country of Poland, this poster was designed by “JHR,” or Jerzy Hryniewiecki (1908-1989). Bold reds and blues are highlighted with silver inks applied in the flag poles, building, and stars. Unfortunately, Hitler’s advance on Poland resulted in the country withdrawing from the fair for the 1940 season. Restoration has addressed tears in the bottom border that extend into the “H” of “POLISH,” chipping in the right border, and a crease in the bottom border into the background. Aż sie prosi by napisac kilka uszczypliwości pod kątem niedbałości i nieuctwa niemieckich aukcjonariuszy z tego domu aukcyjnego. Praca Rubczaka przedstawia kościół ewangelicki w miejscowości Hel. Kościół został pobudowany w XV wieku. Na zachowanej nalepce z krakowskiego salonu Wawrzeckiego można odczytać nazwę miejscowości a reszta jest już tylko drobną formalnością. Porównanie Helu do Saint-Tropez i umieszczenie go nad morzem środziemnomorskim stwarza wrażnie bylejakości ekspertów Auktionaty.
Praca niewątpliwie przedwojenna, autentyczna i jest znakomita. Myślę, że walka o nią może być zażarta.

January Rubczak (1884-1942) – Polish painter in the tradition of the French school of Pont-Aven Signed ‘Rubczak’ lower righ. Oil on, circa 1920. Exhibition: Salon Sztuki, Alfreda Wawrzeckiego, Kraków (verso with the label on the frame). Ornamented and glazed original gilt frame. Overall dimensions, framed: 50.5 x 65.5 cm. Good condition. Provenance: Private Collection Austria Painting in appealing colors depicting a small coastal town in the region of Saint-Tropez; Rubczak’s paintings of the Côte d’Azur fetch over 30,000 Euros on the international auction market. Estimate €4,000 – €5,000.
The present oil painting by Jan Rubczak (1884-1942) depicts a small Mediterranean bay with a couple of boats. A church and several houses rise in the background behind the beach. The vivid colors and the treatment of the subject show the influence of the school of Pont-Aven around the French painter Paul Gauguin. Rubczak did not seek the natural rendering of his subject but an intense composition of simplified forms and without superfluous details. The clear formal language and the understanding of color is reminiscent of the aesthetic of Synthetism.
This work was once exhibited at the studio of Alfreda Wawrzeckiego, Krakow, a so-called ‚Salon Sztuki’, a place for temporary exhibitions, similar to the exhibitions in the Salons of Paris.
The painting is overall in very good condition. The hardboard shows fine vertical tension cracks due to age. The work is signed lower right ‘Rubczak’. On the verso the frame bears an old exhibition label from the Salon Sztuki. The frame shows light losses along the edges. The framed work measures 50.5 x 65.5 cm, the hardboard measures 36 x 50 cm.
Jan Rubczak began his artistic training at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow, headed by Florian Cynk and Joseph Pankiewicza, which he attended in from 1904 to 1911. This was followed by studies at the Art Academy in Leipzig, then at the Académie Colarossi in Paris, where he settled in 1911. His work was promoted by the well-known Parisian art dealer Leopold Zborowski, who also had Modigliani under contract. Rubczak’s paintings were exhibited at the Salon d’Automne and the Salon des Indépendants. He found his themes in the cities of Normandy and Brittany, in the South of France as well as on trips to Italy, the Netherlands and Spain. Back in Krakow, he started teaching at the School of Painting and Drawing and created besides his paintings numerous prints, especially etchings and aquatints. In 1942 Jan Rubczak was murdered in Auschwitz.

Vilnius Travel Poster (Polish State Railways, 1928). Poster (24.25 X 40″). Stefan Norblin (1892-1952) studied in Antwerp and Dresden, perfecting his Art Deco style, and during the interwar years worked extensively in his native Warsaw as a painter, portraitist, interior designer and illustrator. He was commissioned by the Polish State Railways to create a series of posters promoting tourism, including the one presented here featuring the city of Vilnius. The artist left Poland in 1939 to paint the royal family of Iraq, and then moved to India to design the interior of the Maharaja’s palace. Not wanting to return to a post-WWII Communist ruled Poland, Norblin and his wife (European movie star Lena Zelichowska) went into exile in San Francisco. There, he enjoyed success as a portrait artist for the likes of Amadeo Giannini, founder of Bank of America, and General Douglas MacArthur. In 1952, Norblin was struck with glaucoma and committed suicide. Much of his work went largely forgotten until the 1990s, when a German art historian “discovered” Norblin’s work in Indian. A new appreciation for the artist’s talent has emerged, making this beautiful poster a wonderful find. As a historical side note, the city promoted on the poster, Vilnius (Wilno), is now the capital of Lithuania, but was occupied by Poland at various times in the early 20th century. Touchup has been applied to a top left corner chip and a small nick in the top right corner, the only minor handling that keeps the poster from a higher grade. Fine/Very Fine on Linen.
