Condition:
The sheet is good condition as consistent with age. The paper features a slight brownish tone and is mounted on a passepartout, verso fixed on two points. The sheet dimensions are 32.7 x 23.9 cm and the frame measures 56.6 x 47.5 cm.

Roman Opalka (1931-2011)

Born in Northern France, Opalka began a training as print maker at the age of 16. He went to art school in Łódź in 1949 and studied at the Fine Arts Academy in Warsaw.

In the mid 1960´s Opalk began to produce the first series paintings featuring progressive numbers. Throughout his lifetime Opalka was represented in several international exhibitions, as for instance in 1977 in Kassel´s documenta 6. Some of his most important oeuvres are today kept in the Museum of Modern Art and in the Guggenheim Foundation in New York.

Roman Opalka wird am 27. August 1931 in Hocquincourt in der französischen Picardie geboren. Seine polnischen Eltern kehren mit ihm 1935 nach Polen zurück, von wo die Familie jedoch 1940 von den Nationalsozialisten nach Deutschland deportiert wird. 1946 kann Roman Opalka nach Polen zurückkehren, wo er 1947 eine Lithografen-Lehre in Nova Roda (ehem. Neuburg/Schlesien) beginnt. 1949/50 studiert Roman Opalka an der Hochschule für angewandte Kunst in Lodz. 1950 lernt er seine erste Frau Alina Piekarczyk kennen. 1950 bis 1956 studiert Roman Opalka schließlich an der Kunsthochschule in Warschau. 1957 reist der Künstler erstmals nach Paris. 1959-1963 entsteht eine Reihe von abstrakten und monochrom weißen Gemälden, die sein Frühwerk bilden.

1965 beginnt Roman Opalka sein Hauptwerk “OPALKA1965 / 1 – unendlich”, das mit dem Tod des Künstlers 2011 seine Vollendung findet: Opalka schreibt fortlaufende Zahlen, beginnend wie beim Schreiben links oben nach rechts unten. Er beginnt mit der Zahl Eins, das Ziel ist Unendlich, das heißt das Werk kann solange die Kräfte des Künstlers reichen unendlich weitergeführt werden. Jedes vollgeschriebene Blatt ist ein “Detail” des Gesamtkunstwerkes. Es ist der Versuch die Unendlichkeit erfahrbar zu machen. Jedes Gemälde bzw. jede Zeichnung knüpft seither dort an, wo das vorherige aufhörte. Durch den Schreibduktus der Hand und kaum wahrnehmbare Transformationen des Malgrundes entsteht – unabhängig von den Zahlen – ein zeitliches Fortschreiten der Arbeit.

Ab 1970 konzentriert sich Roman Opalka ausschließlich auf die Fortführung dieses Werkes. Ab 1972 mischt der Künstler mit jeder neuen “Detail”-Leinwand ein Prozent mehr Weiß in die Untergrundfarbe Grau, sodass mit jeder neuen Leinwand der Hintergrund heller wird und die Zahlen darauf weniger kontrastieren. Zu den Leinwänden kommen Tonbandaufnahmen der fortlaufenden Zahlen, wobei die geschriebene und die gesprochene Zahl simultan aufgezeichnet werden. Früh schon fotografiert der Künstler sich jeweils am Ende eines Tages selbst, in immer gleichem weißen Hemd, gleicher Situation vor der soeben bearbeiteten Leinwand und mit gleichem Gesichtsausdruck. Die Konsequenz, mit der Roman Opalka dem Konzept seiner Kunst, der Verknüpfung von Werk und Künstlerleben, im immer fortgeführten Werk “OPALKA1965 / 1 – unendlich” treu bleibt, ist in dieser Ausschließlichkeit einzigartig in der Kunst des 20. Jahrhunderts. 1966 findet in Warschau die erste Einzelausstellung statt. 1972 zeigt Roman Opalka sein Werk auf der Biennale in Venedig, 1977 nimmt er an der Documenta 6 in Kassel teil. 1976 erhält er ein einjähriges Stipendium des DAAD für den Aufenthalt in Berlin. Ebenfalls 1976 begegnet er Marie-Madeleine Gazeau, die seine Lebensgefährtin wird. 1977 ziehen sie gemeinsam nach Südfrankreich, wo Opalka 1985 die französische Staatsbürgerschaft annimmt. Roman Opalka erhält zahlreiche Preise und Ehrungen für sein künstlerisches Werk, so etwa 1991 den Prix National de la Peinture und 1993 den Kaiserring der Stadt Goslar. 1985-1990 ist Opalka Gastprofessor der Sommerakademie Salzburg. Roman Opalka verstirbt 2011 in Rom.

Enge Zahlenreihen in Weiß auf ungrundiertem, dunklerem Karton. Für das Oeuvre des bedeutenden, zeitgenössischen Konzeptkünstlers repräsentative Arbeit. Opalka besuchte 1949/50 die Kunstschule in Lódz’ und 1950-1956 die Kunstakademie in Warschau. Sein Akademielehrer Wladyslaw Strzeminski machte ihn mit aktueller Avantgardekunst vetraut. 1959-1963 entstand eine Folge von abstrakten und monochrom weißen Gemälden, die sein Frühwerk bilden. 1965 begann Roman Opalka sein auf Unendlichkeit hin konzipiertes Hauptwerk “1965 / 1-Infinity”, das zugleich sein fortdauerndes Lebenswerk bedeutete: eine Serie von Bildern, bei denen er ausschließlich fortlaufende Reihen aus kleinen, weißen Zahlen auf monochrom dunkelgrauen, einheitlichen Leinwänden malte. 1972 zeigte Opalka diese Bilderreihe auf der Biennale in Venedig, 1977 auf der “documenta 6” in Kassel. 100 cm x 70,5 cm.
