Motiv: Der Tod als Skelett in militärischer Uniform an einem Tisch hinter drei nackten, stehenden Frauen. Der Saal wird im Hintergrund von einem großen geschwungenen Fenster mit roten Scheiben begrenzt.

Czytelnik zastanawia się nad autentycznością tego i innych wystawionych ostatnio na aukcjach prac Jana Lebensteina:

Dzień Dobry, zastanawiam się, czy to jest na pewno autentyk. NIe znam się na Lebensteinie, widziałem nie więcej niż 50-60 jego prac, głownie mixed-media, ale zwróciło moją uwagę, że obraz odbiega nieco od “kanonu warsztatowego” artysty, jak choćby brak tam, tak zwracającej uwagę u “figuratywnego” Lebesteina, subtelności fakturowania powierzchni (postaci i tła). A i same postacie (np. portrety) nieco mniej wyrafinowane, jakby mniej udane od strony estetycznej. 

Zdaję sobie sprawę, że są to obserwacje dyletanta, jednak gdyby i Pan podzielał te wątpliwości, to może warto zwrócić na to uwagę i być może wśród czytelników zjadzie się znawca artysty, który zechce rozwiać watpliwości. Z wyrazami szacunku, Kolekcjoner

John Edwin Canaday, z wykaształcenia historyk sztuki, należał do jednych z najważniejszych amerykańskich krytyków sztuki. W 1961 roku odbyła się w nowojorkim MOMA sławna wystawa ’15 Polish Painters”. Po obejrzeniu Canaday napisał recenzję o wystawie opublikowaną w New York Times (August 1, 1961) z której zacytuję fragment o Janie Lebensteinie:

„The most impressive single painter is Jan Lebenstein, whose recent successes have been formidable and are now understandable. A painter of mammoth, golden, idol-like images, heavily textured and richly glazed, Mr. Lebenstein is a bit remindful of Dubuffet, without the Gallic puckishness, and the Spaniard Cuixart, but with more depth behind similar decorative effects. Mr. Lebenstein’s forms are strong and handsome, part savage and part Byzantinea comparison that might not suggest itself if we were unaware of his nationality. My reservation concerning him is a technical one: I would like some assurance that his great fat gobbets of paint, still wet inside the skins within which they sag, will hold their own with the years.”

W innej, późniejszej recenzji ten sam krytyk później napisał o artyscie: „…Lebenstein ofiarowuje nam nastroje, które w formie intymnej komunikacji między artystą i odbiorcą są najsilniejsze, kiedy najmniej nadają się do przetłumaczenia w słowach…”.

Figura osiowa Jana Lebensteina z 1962 roku, praca na papierze, nieco uszkodzona w dolnym prawym rogu w okolicy sygnatury. Autentyczność nie budzi moich wątpliwości i wiele podobnych prac na papierze artysta dodatkowo sygnował na odwrociu. Praca niewątpliwie dla kolekcjonera prac artysty choć jej ceną wyjściowa ($1,200) oraz wycena są wysokie.
