Essay

A circle of young artists, predominatly of Polish origin, began to form around Josef von Brandt in Munich as of 1875, the so-called ‘Brandt-Schule’. Besides Jan Chelminski, Alfred von Wierusz-Kowalski and Franz Roubaud were also part of this group. Illustrations of historical Cossack- and Tatar warriors, horse markets and hunting scenes made the artists successful for a long time. Additionally, the Polish artists had a faible for scenes from Napoleon’s campaigns. Around 1870 Maksymilian Gierymski revived the historical genre of cousing in Rococo costumes, over the following years his artist friends Wierusz-Kowalski and Chelminski also took this subject on. A work by Chelmisnki that resembles the one offered here was acquired by King Ludwig II. at the ‘Münchner Internationalen Kunstausstellung’ in 1879.

Chelminski

Znacznie wyżej notowany malarz od poprzedniego autora a dlaczego to widać. Dużo utargować pewnie sie nie da ale warto próbować by przypadkowo nie wylądować w górnych widełkach.

Lot 74. Jan van Chelminski (1851-1925), Riders in the Park, Paris, circa 190. Oil on canvas. Polish genre, hunting and war artist. Signed lower left ‘Jan V. Chelminski’. Verso with unfinished sketch of an officer on horseback. Ornamental gold frame with plaque. Dimensions: 41 x 51 cm. Provenance: Private collection, Switzerland.

A classic motif for Chelminski; comparable equestrian subjects by the artist fetch up to €14,500 on the international auction market.

The present painting by Jan van Chelminski was created around 1900 and depicts a young woman on horseback before a small forested area. She is wearing a splendid red costume decorated with rich gold trimmings, which hints at her high social status. In the left background one discern another figure on horseback, presumably her suitor whom she has only just seen off. Van Chelminski painted mainly riders and battle scenes from the Napoleonic campaigns as well as genre or hunting scenes, which enjoyed particular appreciating among the members of the upper classes.
The work is in restored condition. The surface is heavily cleaned with rubbed off color, except in the area around signature, where the old varnish is still preserved. There are retouchings to the background, the horse and the figure. The frame shows some wear. The framed work measures 56 x 66 cm, the stretcher frame measures 41 x 51 cm.

Jan van Chelminski (1851-1925)
Chelminski studied at the Warsaw drawing school and was a pupil of the painter and draftsman Juliusz Kossak. In 1874 he moved to Munich where he attended the Academy of Fine Art as a student of Józef Brandt and the battle and horse painter Franz Adam. From 1876 onwards Chelminski participated in exhibitions in Munich, Berlin, Vienna, London and Paris. He was primarily a war painter but his genre and hunting paintings were especially sought after by members of the upper classes. Chelminski traveled to the UK, Paris and St. Petersburg before eventually settling in New York. Estimate €2,400 – €3,000. Auctionata. 10/6/14.

Lot 18. Jan Van Chelminski. Polish, 1851-1925. Napoleon Passing through the Guadarrama Mountains, 1808. Signed Jan V. Chelminski (ll); inscribed Hazel Hortman on the stretcher. Oil on canvas; 30 5/8 x 39 5/8 inches (77.8 x 100.6 cm)

There is a painting entitled The Crossing of the Guadarrama Pass, Campaign in Spain, 1808 listed in a catalogue of an exhibition at M. Knoedler & Co., New York, Military Pictures of the French, Russian, Polish and British Armies by J.V. Chelminski. The exhibition was held from Jan. 31 to Feb. 12, 1916. The painting is listed as no. 20. Chelminski’s second wife, Leonia, was the daughter of New York art dealer, Michael Knoedler.

Chelminski chose to depict Napoleon’s advance through the Somosierra Pass in the Guadarrama Mountains on the morning of November 30, 1808. Napoleon’s troops, shown hunched and braced against the frigid morning air, follow closely behind their intrepid leader up the frozen pass towards the Spanish contingent. Such carefully observed effects as these made Chelminski one of the great history painters of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Property of a New York Collector. Estimate $30,000-50,000.
