Ktoś uważa, że kupił tanio i chce sprzedać teraz drożej. Przyznam, że jest to zręczna kompozycja, dobry warsztat, choć ani wielkich wrażen ani przesłania tam nie ma. Troszkę to zwietrzalo.

Wycena na ten obraz została wydmuchana z gorącego powietrza. To, że praca jest w Christie’s nie znaczy, że należy kupić w granicach tej wyceny. Dużo taniej będzie można kupić innego ‘Napoleona’ w innym domu aukcyjnym, prawdopodobnie w USA, najwyżej za połowę dolnej wyceny. Radzę zachować zimną krew i nie ulegać emocjom. Chełmiński namalował wiele obrazów z Napoleonem na koniu.

Jan Chelmiński malowal konie ale nie perszerony lecz konie arystokratyczne, wysokie, uczesane, osiodłane jak należy, z jeźdźcami których umundurowanie było historycznie sprawdzone. Konie zwykle stoją w miejscu a jeśli w są ruchu to swobodnie idą a nie pędzą. Przyznam, że nie widziałem pracy Chełmińskiego bez namalowanych koni. Ceny na jego malarstwo ocierają sie o $10,000, choć można kupić taniej, nawet za $3,000. Obraz musi być wyjątkowo dobry i duży by był drogi. Rekordowe ceny to ponad $100,000 za każdą z dużych prac sprzedanych w Ketterer Kunst (2016/17). Dla mnie te jego proce są zbyt monotonne, nie ma niespodzianek. Prymitywnie dzielę je na zoppfy, prace napoleońskie z Napoleonem i bez Napoleona oraz na nieliczne scenki rodzajowe. Każdy może wybrać takiego Chełmińskiego jaki mu najbardziej odpowiada. Podaż na rynku jest duża lecz nie należy bić się o płótno do wykrwawienia siebie i przeciwnika bo zaprawdę za krótki czas pojawi się nastepne. Dużo prac jest w Niemczech i dużo jest w USA, gdzie przeniósł się artysta z Monachium do Nowego Jorku. Osobiście preferuję prace Chełmińskiego z jego wczesnego okresu monachijskiego, gdy sygnował prace prosto i zwyczajnie Jan Chełmiński. Później okrzepł i dodał przed nazwiskiem literke v. czyli von, podkreslając swoje szlachectwo. Przedstawiam te prace jakie pominąłem w poprzednim roku.
Radzę kupować oleje Jana Chełmińskiego w Niemczech lub USA. Jest tam dużo, dużo taniej niż w Polsce.

Essay
Jan Chelminski was born in Brzostów, Poland, in 1851 and had his first art lessons in the drawing class of Juliusz Kossak in Warsaw. In order to make a living he was working part-time as lithographer and retoucher at a photographic institute. In 1873 Chelminski relocated to Munich and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts at Alexander Strähuber and Alexander Wagner. In 1875 he was student of the acclaimed artist Josef von Brandt and a year later of Franz Adam. He was member of the Munich Artist Association from 1874 to 1883. As of around 1875 a circle of young, predominantly Polish artists formed around Josef von Brandt in Munich, the so-called Brandt-School. Apart from Jan Chelminski, other artists in the group were Alfred von Wierusz-Kowalski and Franz Roubaud. Historical illustrations of Cossack and Tatar warriors, depictions of horse markets and hunting scenes contributed to the artists success for many years. Scenes from Napoleons campaigns also were motifs popular with the Polish painters. As of around 1870 Maksymilian Gierymski revived the historic genre of coursing scenes with rococo costumes, over the following years his painter colleagues Wierusz-Kowalski and Chelminski adopted this trend. The large-format painting of a courtly hunt with coach and a pack of hounds offered here is particularly rich in detail. Following his years in Munich, Chelminski initially went to England in 1882 and then traveled throughout Europe for some time. As of 1884 he lived in New York for several years. In 1888 and1899 he made London his home again before he relocated to Paris where he was among the founding members of the Polish Literary Society in 1910. For some years he was also the society’s vice president. Chelminski was also active as translator of Polish literature into French. In 1915 the artist settled in New York, where he died in 1925. Footnotes
The Battle of Montmirail on 11th February 1814 would see Napoleon defeat the allied forces of Prussia and Russia, and marked the second of four victories for the Emperor during the Six Days’ Campaign. Although a victory for the outnumbered French forces, this campaign would indicate the end of the War of the Sixth Coalition and the downfall of Napoleon. As coalition forces began to push through France, placing huge pressure on its army, and eventually taking Paris at which point forcing the Emperor’s abdication.
