Ważny obraz kubistyczny z dorobku Markusa. Tytuł pracy na postawie nalepki paryskiej Galerie Kriegel to ‘Portrait de Apollinare‘.
Lot 324. Louis Marcoussis (Varsavia, 1878 – Cusset, 1941) – Natura morta. Oil on canvas, 68 x 54.5 cm. Signature and date at lower right. On verso: label Galerie Kahnweiler; label Collection Particuliere Tzara; label Gallery Kriegel; cartouche with poem by Guillaume Apollinare, signed. The work was made on the occasion of the publication of Guillaume Apollinaire’s collection of poems entitled Alcools. Marcoussis gave the painting as a gift to the poet, who convinced the art dealer Daniel – Henry Kahnweiler to exhibit it in his gallery on Rue Vignon for sale. After a few months, the work returned to Apollinaire’s collection and upon his death entered those of several artists and intellectuals including DADA poet Tristan Tzara. Since 1940, traces of it were lost due to the vicissitudes of war. The painting had been considered lost until it was rediscovered by the Kriegel Gallery. (Translation and summary of Expertise by Alice Marcoussis, dated 1973).
