In 1923, Zukowski moved from the Soviet Union to his homeland Poland. One of the main subjects of the outstanding painter were landscapes that he captured with regards of the seasons and their different incidences of light.

Condition:
The painting is in good condition, showing minor craquelue and pressure marks from the stretcher. The varnish has been renewed. The inspection under UV light reveals a few strengthening strokes of retouching. The frame shows minor wear. The dimensions are 53.5 x 63 cm, while the frame measures 72 x 82 cm.

Stanislaw Zukowski (1873-1944)

In 1892 Stanislaw Zukowski attended the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture as a pupil of Makowski and Arkhipov. In addition, he was taught by the great Russian painter Isaak Ilyich Levitan. Already as a student he was honored with several awards, his work ‘Moonlit Night’ was purchased by the Tretyakov Gallery. From 1895 Zukowski regularly participated in exhibitions in Moscow. He was a member of the group ‘Mir Iskusstva’ and the Union of Russian Artists. Zukowski was a celebrated landscape painter in Russia in the tradition of Impressionism; the Russian patron Pavel Tretyakov bought several of his works. Later the artist also received awards abroad, e.g. at the International Art Exhibition in Munich. In 1912 he visited Europe, traveling through Switzerland, Germany, France and Italy. After the October Revolution Zukowski initially stayed in Moscow, then worked in Poland, where he taught young artists. In the 1920s, Zukowski’s works were exhibited in the US and Canada, as well as Paris and Copenhagen. Recurring themes in the artist’s oeuvre are landscapes, as well as interiors and window views. His paintings are exhibited in the Tretyakov Gallery, the Russian Museum, the Museum of Russian Art in Kiev, the National Art Museum of Belarus in Minsk, the National Museum in Warsaw, and the National Gallery in Krakow.

Henryk Ippolitovich Siemiradzki often rendered his works a sensuous character, created by choosing a female subject surrounded by a delicate play of light. The here present young woman is depicted with a red flower, while sitting on a stone bench. The composition reflects a typical genre motif of the artist, when dealing with the Greek or Roman classic period.
Condition:

The painting is in good condition, consistent with age. The canvas has been relined along the edges and shows light marks, where the frame has rubbed. Inspection under UV light reveals a number of old retouchings to the figure and the background, as well as some more recent retouchings to the upper edge. The stretcher measures 42 x 25 cm.

Henryk Ippolitovich Siemiradzki (1843-1902)
Henryk Siemiradzki was a prominent member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts and regularly won a number of silver and gold medals. In 1871 he left Munich, where he had studied at the academy for a year. From 1872 he settled permanently in Rome and established two studios far beyond 1884. Siemiradzki was focused on mythical, historical and religious themes, but was also inspired by the ancient Greece and Rome. He is especially famous for his monumental, stage-like paintings, but he occasionally also painted small idyllic genre scenes. (cbo)

Vivid scenic depiction of the Capernaum-story in front of a magnificent Far Eastern backdrop

This beautiful and epic interpretation of the Sermon at Capernaum belongs to the highlights of the auction and is a typical work of the artist concerning scale, subject and way of painting of the Russian-Polish painter Vasily Alexandrovich Kotarbinsky who favored the depiction of biblical motives. The alternation of dark and bright parts brings vitality to the painting and can be seen in the color of the clothes of the figures as well as on houses and plants, were light and shadow change.

Condition:
The painting is in good condition consistent with the age. The varnish is slightly darkened and tiny craquelé can be seen overall on the canvas. There are areas with scuffing due to the frame along the upper edges and corners of the canvas and scattered marks can be seen. The painting has been skillfully repaired. Several retouched spots can be seen mainly affecting the part of the figures as well as the sky and the house. On the reverse the canvas shows relined spots. The frame shows traces of usage such as tears, scratches, marks and spots with loss of color, resp. loss of material. The dimensions are 78.5 x 120.3 cm and the frame measures 105 x 150.5 cm.

Vasily Alexandrovich Kotarbinsky (1849-1921)
Vasily Alexandrovich Kotarbinsky was a Polish painter of the 19th and early 20th century. Kotarbinsky started his artistical career at the Warsaw School of Drawing in the 1870s, later he studied at the art academy in St. Petersburg. Very important for his development were several longer stays in Rome, which had a deep impact on his way of painting and his choice of subjects. He borrowed money from his family for his first trip to Rome during his education and stayed there for three years. Characteristic for his oeuvre are the depictions of biblical subjects as well as classical Roman themes and fantastic-mythical images. One of his main works are the frescos in the St. Vladimir Cathedral in Kiev. Works of the artist are in collections in St. Petersburg and Moscow.
