The painting is an example for Zukowski’s early work. Being a student at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpting and Architecture form 1892 until 1897 Zukowski was influenced by the greatest exponent of the Moscow Landscape School, Isaak Lewitan.
This influence can be spotted in the composition of the painting, in the special “Lewitan” atmosphere and in the motif of the rail. This motif which is characteristic for Lewitan will later disappear from Zukowski’s works.
Possibly Zukowski exhibited the present painting in the 17th exhibition of students of the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpting and Architecture in 1894 under the title “At the rail line” (exhibition catalogue, no. 90).
