Portrait of a Girl with Laurel Wreath, signed Czachorski, on the reverse an old handwritten label with title, oil on canvas, 34 x 27.5 cm, framed Provenance: Galerie Helbing, Munich, 18 May 1903, lot 17; European Private Collection; Bukowski, Stockholm, 26 November 1997, lot 229; European Private Collection. The Polish painter Władysław Czachórski (Ladislaus von Czachorski) is a representative of the Munich School. He began his artistic education in 1866/1867, in the drawing class taught by the Polish history painter Rafał Hadziewicz (1803-1883). After this, he studied at the Dresden Academy of Art in 1868 before heading to the Munich Academy of Fine Arts from 1869 to 1873. He undertook study trips to Italy and France between 1874 and 1877, before settling in Munich in 1879. He ran a studio in there until his death, and soon established himself as a portrait painter favoured by the city’s wealthy bourgeoisie. He mainly painted genre scenes, portraits and still lifes, as well as images from literature, history and drama. His pictures of Shakespearean dramas are characterised by the naturalistic rendering of female figures in 18th-century costumes. This lot is one of Czachórski’s extraordinary paintings and shows a girl with a laurel wreath, looking upwards in a reverie. The fabric that drapes the girl’s arm is masterfully rendered, as are the leaves of the laurel wreath. The sitter is depicted with photographic precision, with her gaze inviting the viewer to join her in her dreaming. Estimate €40,000 – €60,000. Dorotheum. 06/08/20
Wachlarz z pracą Otolii Kraszewskiej i Władysława Czachórskiego
Wachlarz niemiecki na którym znajdują sie dwa pióra z pracami polskich artystów: Otolii Kraszewskiej oraz Władysława Czachórskiego. Wachlarz jest współczesnie oprawiony. Polscy kolekcjonerzy cenią sobie oczywiście polskich artystów a tu jedynie są dwa takie nazwiska i stąd spodziewam sie niezbyt dużego zainteresowania w Polsce. Wachlarze są o tyle ciekawe, że można mieć galerię wielu artystów na małym kawałku ściany. Jednak, w większości przypadków prace są małe i nie zawsze najlepszej wartości artystycznej. To zwykle były prace malowane na rzecz konkretnej osoby (jubilata), przez jego kolegów artystów. Czasami palety malarskie malowało kilku artystówi te chyba lepiej można wyeksponować.

Warszawski Tygodnik Ilustrowany opublikował w 1911 roku pośmiertne wspomnienie o Władysławie Czachórskim. Wśród wielu fotografii jego prac było zamieszczone czarno-białe zdjęcie Kleopatry. Ta właśnie mała wymiarami praca była licytowana w Sotheby’s i przyniosła 12,500 funtów brytyjskich.

Nieduży wymiarami portret Damy z wachlarzem był licytowany dwukrotnie w ciagu 5 lat. Pierwszy raz obraz ten pod tytułem Jeune belle sprzedano w Christie’s (11/01/12, lot 41) za $40,000 (wycena $40,000 – 60,000), zaś drugi raz pod koniec grudnia 2017 w Sotheby’s za jedyne 30,000 GBP czyli za niemalże za tyle samo. Przykład na to, że ceny na prace Czachórskiego są stabilne na rynkach zachodnich (ku utrapieniu posiadaczy).

Innego formatu pracę Czachórskiego sprzedało Dorotheum za 7,000 euro. Był to portret młodej kobiety trzymający w ręku koszyczek z kwiatami. Praca namalowana została na płótnie jaki został napiętny na blejtram, który tworzył pióro wachlarza. Jak taką prace oprawić by ją powiesić pokazuje niemalże identyczny przykład z Polswissart, gdzie w 2016 roku wystawiono bardzo podobną kompozycję (wycena 25,000 – 35,000 złotych, czyli ok 5,700 – 8,000 euro). Tej ostatniej nie sprzedano. [Wiele mi się na niej nie podoba, jak np. cienie na rękach, zbyt wyraźna sygnatura, chyba nałożona na tę wyblakłą/nałożoną delikatniej, etc. Ale to moja subiektywna ocena na podstawie fotografii bo rzeczywistość może być inna]

Surrounded by a sumptuous interior, a girl in the prime of youth takes a moment’s rest from her reading. The painting shows Czarchorski at the height of his skills in depicting genre subjects. The rosy flush of her cheeks is played off by the sensuous furnishings, from the silk upholstery of the sofa on which she sits, to the veined marble table top and the gushing blossom, redolent of sophisticated taste and social status. While the girl’s pose and black choker bring to mind Manet’s Olympia, the message could not be more different. While the latter was the ultimate challenge to the conventional depiction of women in art, Czarchorski’s painting plays to refined taste.
Czachorski’s favourite subjects ranged from still lifes to Shakespearian scenes, but he is best known for his detailed illustrations of exquisite aristocratic women in extravagantly appointed interiors. Czachorski began his artistic training at the Warsaw Drawing School at the age of sixteen. After studying for a year at the Dresden Academy and joining the Munich Academy, where he spent five years under the direction of Hermann Anschutz, Alexander Wagner and Karl von Piloty, he won the prestigious Grand Silver Medal upon graduation. Czachorski then travelled throughout Europe, visiting France, Italy and Poland. He settled permanently in Munich in 1879, but continued to exhibit frequently in Poland, in particular Warsaw, Krakow, Lwow and Lodz.
