Prawdopodobnie bardzo wczesne rysunki Artura Szyka powstałe na teranach Polski w okresie rosyjskich zaborów. Prace Szyka osiągają ceny kilku tysięcy dolarów ale są to wtedy rysunki lub alwarele o olbrzymiej ilości szczegółów, czasami ilustracje do książek, malowane jakby z użyciem szkła powiekszającego,.

Poniżej 100 euro za sztukę wygląda mi na okazję choć atrakcja tych sześciu prac jest umiarkowana.

Je signiert (teils “A. Szyk”, teils “Schick”). Teils verso beschriftet (von fremder Hand?). – Unter Passepartout montiert. Teils schwach gegilbt bzw. minimal fleckig. Teils die Montierung gelöst.

Szyk fertigte während des Zweiten Weltkrieges als Kritik gegen das nationalsozialistische Regime politische Karikaturen und Illustrationen an. Diese erschienen in amerikanischen Zeitschriften und Tageszeitungen.

Illustration from the 4-volume edition of Arabian Nights Entertainments, Limited Editions Club, New York, 1954. 146×108 mm; 5 3/4×4 1/4 inches. Inscribed (not by Szyk) lower center (illegible): “op: 241-296 / –Nights 20-24 / ‘They Lifted Bad-Al-Din Hasan on Their Wings . . . The Tale of Nur-Al -Din / and His Son. / XXX.” Tipped to matte, archivally matted and framed.

Notes: Born in Lodz, Poland, the great Jewish artist, illustrator and caricaturist Arthur Szyk fled Nazi oppression and eventually settled in the United States in 1940. The precision of his line, the jewel-like colors and meticulous, compact compositions drew greatly on his deep admiration for medieval illuminated manuscripts and Persian miniatures. Like Arthur Rackham’s edition of The Wind in the Willows (1940) and Edmund Dulac’s The Masque of Comus (1954), Szyk’s massive four-volumed The Arabian Nights (1954) was issued posthumously without the limitation leaf signed by the artist. Malarz, ilustrator, karykaturzysta; był popularny w środowisku, polskim, żydowskim, francuskim, brytyjskim, amerykańskim. Znał i przyjaźnił się z ogromem osób ze środowiska kultury i polityki. Popularność miał za życia a teraz wpada w coraz większe zapomnienie. Cenię jego maleńkie prace, jakie powstały chyba z użytciem szkła powiekszającego, tyle bowiem w nich detail, że za każdym razem można odnaleźć zwykle coś nowego. Prace nad historia Żydów, jak ta powyżej, to jeden z nutów jego twórczości. Osobiście, do polskich kolekcji szukałbym tematu traktującego o naszej historii, jakiegoś patriotycznego tematu jakich namalował ogromną ilość – czuł się emocjonalnie związany z Polską i jej historią.
