Kuszenie świętego Antoniego w maleńkim formacie. Może Jan Styka miał jakieś miłe wspomnienia z przeszłości by je pod koniec życia wstydliwie opisać pędzlem jako męczarnie? Nie śledziłem tej aukcji i nie znam ceny sprzedaży.

This painting served as an illustration for the poem Trojglowa hydra, part of Jan Styka’s 1916 publication Z lez, krwi i zelaza honoring Poles serving in the French Army (p. 25). On the back of the painting is a sketch of a woman’s portrait as well as annotations listing personalities (probably those represented in the lower right of our painting): Mickiewicz, V. Na zakończenie sagi rodów Styków przedstawiam dwa oleje seniora rodu. Ludzkość ciemiężona przez trójgłowa hydrę to praca o dużej symbolice sporym zaangażowaniu emocjonalnym artysty; bardzo wyróżnia się wśród jego prac. Przypuszcam, że będzie hitem sprzedaży. Ulisses obejmujący swojego syna jest jedną z prac służących do ilustracji Odysei Homera. Jan Styka podjął się zobrazować tę książkę, a oleje ją ilustrujące pojawiają się czasami na aukcjach. Myślę, że uważny czytelnik PAC znajdzie kilka z nich na stronach blogu.

Il existe une copie du certificat d’authenticité par Madame Lynne Thornton. Historique : Eugénie Meurlot-Chollet (1875-1960) peintre amateur, élève de Jules Chéret, était propriétaire de la villa Pax à Boulouris où elle recevait les personnalités de la scène, romanciers et artistes tels Mucha, Friesz, Dufy et Lalique.  Il existe un autre portrait d’Eugénie Meurlot-Chollet par Styka dans la collection du Smart Museum of Art, University of Chicago. Mam wiele uzania dla Jana Styki, zwłaszcza za wychowanie dwójki synów, pierwszorzędnych malarzy, Adama i Tadeusza, i cenię jego wczesną twórczość, nawet portretową. Portret z nadchodzącej aukcji, jest nie tylko wielki ale i drętwy a portretowana p. Eugénie Meurlot-Chollet ustawiona jest bardzo sztucznie i bez ciepła. O ileż inny i bardzo dobry jest portret tej samej kobiety, namalowany również przez mistrza Jana, przechowywany w zbiorach Smart Museum of Art w Chicago (poniżej). Z przekąsem napiszę, że rodzina portretowanej winna kupić ten wielki obraz.

In this work, Styka portrays the Parisian socialite Madame Eugenie Meurlot-Chollet as Sappho—the celebrated classical Greek poetess from the island of Lesbos whose writings center on human love. Clothed in an ancient robe, Styka’s sitter stares seductively at the viewer, while the stormy sky, like the deep red of her robe, hints at inner passion. The Egyptian-style bracelet and elaborate rings add exotic yet biographical touches—Madame Meurlot-Chollet was well known for modeling the latest creations of the famous Art Nouveau jeweler René Lalique.

Zdaje się, że jest to dalszy ciąg kolekcji wyprzedawanej w tym samym domu w marcu, aukcji wówczas rekordowej, z której większość prac została wykupiona przez kolekcjonerów. Niewiasta z kagankiem nie należy do arcydzieł Jana Styki, choć to praca przyjemna w oglądaniu a spora wycena może leży również w proweniencji. W marcu pracę tę sprzedano za 20,000 euro a obecnie wracamy do ceny wyjściowej. Ktoś się rozmyslił …i nie zapłacił.

Patrząc na datowanie pracy, rysunek wykonal 20-letni Jan Styka. Gdyby artysta tak rysował (malował) później, utrzymał formę, to mógłby konkurować z tymi najlepszymi, z najwyższej półki.

Bardzo sobie cenię Jana Stykę i bawi mnie złość Wojciecha Kossaka na tego malarza wyrażana w jego pamiętnikach i wspomnieniach – poszło chyba o Panoramę Racławicką. Do prac Jana Styki trzeba być bardzo selektwyny bo bywa sporo słabych, wiele średnich a rzadko bardzo dobre. Tę bym zaliczył do średnich, mogących się podobać eterycznością postaci kobiecej i tajemniczą sytuacją w jakiej się znalazła. Może olej powstał do jednej z książek z zakresu mitologii (kaganek oliwny), które ilustrował pracując we Francji?
