Wszystkie prace Jerzego i Wojciecha Kossaków jakie ukażą się w ciągu tego tygodnia w austriackim ImKinski zebrałem razem. Wielkim zaskoczeniem jest dla mnie niezwykle ciekawa praca Jerzego Kossaka ‘Wizja Napoleona na św. Helenie’ namalowana w 1922 roku. Nie widziałem do tej pory jej replik (może przemknęła się niezauważona?) a zatem może to być praca jednostkowa. Tak również bywało u Jerzego, że popelnił jedną udana pracę i już do niej więcej nie wracał. Czy tak jest w tym przypadku? Również poniższy, lecz powtarzany wielokrotnie ‘Święty Hubert’ jest dobrze wykończony. Odnośnie prac Wojciecha Kossaka z tego katalogu to zwracaja uwagę jego ‘czyste’ pejzaże, bez najmniejszego śladu sztafażu. Wojciech Kossak jako pejzażysta jest mało znany bo każdy chce ułana na koniu. Okazuje się, że artysta bardzo dobrze radził sobie jako pejzażysta. Kto wie, gdyby nie te niekończące się jego długi do płacenia a stąd konieczność malowania dla kunsthandlerów, może oglądalibyśmy więcej z jego serca płynących obserwacji przyrody. Generalnie, każdy z obrazów z tego katalogu (aż siedemnaście prac Kossaków) jest dobry i można sobie wybrać coś do kolekcji (włączywszy hodowców koni, patrz ‘główki’ końskie Wojciecha!). Spodziewam się dużego zainteresowania tą aukcją zarówno kolekcjonerów (Wizja Napolenona Jerzego może być dużym przebojem wśród tych prac) jak też i handlarzy.

Nie wiedziałem, że bostoński Skinner sprzedaje teraz horse manure. Nic nie zmieni nalepka z tyłu obrazu – nie warto nawet prosić o jej fotografię. ‘Specjaliści’ tego domu aukcyjnego cżęsto wystepują w telewizyjnym Antique Road Show. Nic nie pomoże.

Proza życia kawalerzyty w stajni. Inna wersja tego tematu w wykonaniu Wojciecha Kossaka jest zaprezentowana w albumie Kazimierza Olszańskiego (czarno biała fotografia) pt. W stajni (1931 r.). Obraz z Nicei jest prawdziwy, zwracają uwagę spore wymiary plótna, i powinien znaleźć nabywców powyżej ceny estymacyjnej. Wyglądający na słabo wykończony obrys zadu konia na ścianie stajni może trochę razić ale to drobiazg w przypadku Wojciecha, który jest kochany bezgranicznie.

Obraz ten by wystawiony na aukcji w Dorotheum w maju lecz nie było kupca za wyjściowe 6,000 euro. Obecnie wycena jest rozsądniejsza i licytacja może rozpocząć sie poniżej 5,000 euro. Zachwyca mnie czmychający w bok zajączek na tej smutnej zimowej pracy przedstawiającej zagubionego żołnierza armii napoleońskiego. Wojciech Kossak malował w okresie galopującej inflacji bardzo dużo, było wielu kupców na jego prace bo były one lepsze od pieniędzy, ówczesnych marek polskich.

Dobra kompozycja Wojciecha Kossaka. Duży obraz a cena estymacyjna ustalona nisko nie biorąca pod uwagę polskiego rynku. Obraz ten był drogi w dwudziestoleciu międzywojennym i teraz też będzie drogi. Można śmiało kupić do kolekcji i cieszyc się z posiadania lecz obawiam sie, że handlarze będą grali pierwsze skrzypce.

Proszę się nie łudzić, że ten szkic był na wystawie w Salonie sztuki w Krakowie. Był prawdopodobnie wystawiony tam na sprzedaż a nie na wystawie. Rok 1920 był to trudny rok dla wszytkich – walka o przetrwania. Znakomity szkic wiejskiej dziewczyny.

Big stretch with attribution and big stretch with monogram presence. I am pretty sure, even Desa-Unicum wouldn’t accept this painting on her auction. But, ….beautiful and compassionate catalogue note can be used for other occasion – love it!

“Kossak was one of the innumerable European artists enchanted by the Middle East and Asia during the 19th century. The popularity of “Orientalism” in the Western canon is oftentimes characterized by romanticized and amalgamated images of exotic locales, fashions and people. Here, Kossak offers a mysterious and seductive portrait of a veiled woman gazing directly at the viewer. Who is she? Is this a portrait from life, or a fleeting memory from Kossak’s trip? I happen to love the quick, sketch-like character or the painting, which was a hallmark of the artist.”. David Pollack

This striking and seemingly spontaneous oil sketch of a veiled woman was painted by the Polish artist Wojciech Kossak, whose artistic renown stretched far beyond his native land. The sketchy yet carefully detailed technique used here was a hallmark of his style, though such reserved subjects were rare within his typically theatrical oeuvre, which largely consisted of dramatic history paintings. That it is subtly monogrammed with his initials rather than his full name suggests this work may have been intended as a more personal or private endeavor rather than a commission.  

Kossak came from a family of artists, as the son of the painter Juliusz. Kossak and the godson of famed battle painter Horace Vernet. He trained in Paris at the École des Beaux-Arts under Alexandre Cabanel and Léon Bonnat, and also studied at the Krakow School of Fine Arts. From 1874-1876, he attended the Academy of Arts in Munich, where he joined a network of hundreds of Polish expatriates and where he found lasting support for his large-scale history scenes. Among his friends here were the artists Tadeusz Ajdukiewicz, whom would greatly influence Kossak, and Michael Gorstkin Wywiórski. Kossak was one of the more than sixty Polish artists who travelled to the Middle-East in the 19th and early 20th centuries, and in 1900 he traveled with Wywiórski to Egypt, where he may have completed the present sketch.
