Born in Saint Petersburg, Mieczyslaw Lurczynski studied painting in Warsaw with Blanche Mercère and Adam Rychtarski. He exhibited in a number of Polish cities and quickly achieved success. He was also a writer, publishing poetry and plays. He was arrested in 1943 and sent to Buchenwald; after liberation, he settled permanently in Paris in 1949.
