BETTELNDER ARMOR

Bronze, hell patiniert. H. 34,5 cm. Auf der Plinthe signiert ‘GODEBSKI’. Cyprian Godebski war Enkel des Schriftstellers Cyprian Godebski und Sohn von Historiker Franciszek Ksawery Godebski, Kustos des Lemberger Ossolineum-Instituts. Er besuchte die polnische Volksschule in Batignolles und studierte Skulptur in Paris bei François Jouffroy. 1858 zog er nach Lemberg, 1861 nach Wien und 1863 nach Sankt Petersburg, wo er zum Professor an der Akademie der Bildenden Künste berufen wurde.

Cyprian Godebski was a Polish sculptor and from 1870 a professor at the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg. He was the grandson of Polish poet and novelist Cyprian Godebski, creator of the ”Legions poetry” genre, who had served in Napoleon’s Polish Legions.
