Stanislaw Zukowski (1873-1944)
In 1892 Stanislaw Zukowski attended the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture as a pupil of Makowski and Arkhipov. In addition, he was taught by the great Russian painter Isaak Ilyich Levitan. Already as a student he was honored with several awards, his work ‘Moonlit Night’ was purchased by the Tretyakov Gallery. From 1895 Zukowski regularly participated in exhibitions in Moscow. He was a member of the group ‘Mir Iskusstva’ and the Union of Russian Artists. Zukowski was a celebrated landscape painter in Russia in the tradition of Impressionism; the Russian patron Pavel Tretyakov bought several of his works. Later the artist also received awards abroad, e.g. at the International Art Exhibition in Munich. In 1912 he visited Europe, traveling through Switzerland, Germany, France and Italy. After the October Revolution Zukowski initially stayed in Moscow, then worked in Poland, where he taught young artists. In the 1920s, Zukowski’s works were exhibited in the US and Canada, as well as Paris and Copenhagen. Recurring themes in the artist’s oeuvre are landscapes, as well as interiors and window views.
