Hofman studierte ab 1896 an der Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Krakau und ab 1899 an der École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. 1907 wurde er Mitglied der Wiener Sezession. Hofman war Vertreter des jungpolnischen Sybolismus mit Themen aus dem Religiösen und Mythologischen.

Bardzo sobie cenię symboliczne prace Hofmana ale tym portrecie trudno napisać coś dobrego.

Condition:

The painting is in a good condition according to age. The paint surface is slightly darkened and shows craquelure and scattered stains. The upper edge of the panel shows marks from a former mounting. The inspection under UV light reveals the repainted signature, otherwise no evidence of retouching. The wooden frame shows craquelure consistent with age. The painting’s dimensions are 71 x 48 cm, while the frame measures 84 x 61 cm.

Wątpię by był to jeden z licznych autoportretów Hofmana. W roku 1908 był zapewnie młodszy (27 lat) porównując do wieku sumiastego mężczyzny z tej pracy. Prace Hofmana z okresu sprzed I wojny światowej są najbardziej poszukiwane na rynku. Nie jest to jednak żadna z jego ‘Madonn z dziećmi’ a jedynie wąsaty chłop w ludowym stroju z okolic…(?).

3,600 euro to znacznie za dużo za taki portret Hofmana.

Drugi tryptyk Hofmana jest dla mnie mało czytelny. Tytuł pracy, ‘De profundis’, nawiązuje zapewnie biblijnego Psalmu 130:

From the depths, I have cried out to you, O Lord;
Lord, hear my voice. Let your ears be attentive
to the voice of my supplication.
If you, Lord, were to mark iniquities, who, O Lord, shall stand?
For with you is forgiveness; and because of your law, I stood by you, Lord.
My soul has stood by his word.
My soul has hoped in the Lord.
From the morning watch, even until night, let Israel hope in the Lord.
For with the Lord there is mercy, and with him is plenteous redemption.
And he will redeem Israel from all his iniquities.

Nie potrafię jednak tej aluzyjności pracy malarskiej zrozumieć. Zakładam, że Hofman podchodził do niej bardzo emocjonalnie bo praca niewątpliwie zasługuje na zauważenie. Okres świetności artysta miał już dawno za sobą ale praca dobra, dlatego nie należy bezwzględnie polegać na zdaniu krytyków szufladkujących artystów i ich okresy. Każdy artysta potrafi z siebie wykrzesać coś dobrego nawet jeśli datowana praca powstanie nie wtedy gdy powstać powinna.

Dobry, choć powojenny tryptyk Hoffmana o treści religijnej podarowany przez malarza swojemu spowiednikowi. Ciekawe, dlaczego następcy spowiednika nie zdecydowali się na zatrzymanie tej pracy na plebanii lub w kościele. To mnie troche martwi bo tryptyk jest dobry przedstawiający Chrystusa, świętego Piotra (kur o świcie) i chyba schematycznie rudego Judasza (drzewo + rudy=fałszywy?) żałującego za swoja zdradę.
