Lot 36. JACEK MALCZEWSKI (1854-1929). Portrait of Józef Krupiński signed and dated ‘J Malczewski / 1916’ (lower right) oil on board 21 1/4 x 25 7/8 (64.8 x 52.0 cm). Painted in 1916. Provenance: Sopocki Dom Aukcyjny, Sopot, Poland. Jan and Barbara Trypaluk Collection, Saratoga Springs, NY (acquired from the previous 1997). The present work depicts Józef Krupiński, a famous poet and lifelong friend of the artist. Krupiński is seen here portrayed in the uniform of a lieutenant of the 56th Austro-Hungarian (Galicia) infantry regiment. The work is presented in beautiful portico style gilded frame, possibly original to the painting. A similar work by the artist of the same subject but show Krupiński’s side profile was offered through Sopocki Dom Aukcyjny in 2018. Estimate $70,000 – 90,000. Bonhams. 03/12/26

Kolekcja państwa Trypaluków, obecnie ulegająca rozproszeniu wielokrotnie powołuje sie na proweniencję z SDA. Tak jest w przypadku tego obrazu, tak jest w przypadku np. obrazu Józefa Pankiewicza z tego samego katalogu.
