John Sobieski (1629-1696), King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania, was a relentless opponent of the expansion of the Turkish empire into Europe. His most notable victory was at the Battle of Vienna in 1683, where he relieved a Turkish siege of the city, leading the largest cavalry charge in history. Following this, Pope Innocent XI hailed him as the “Saviour of Christianity.”
