Maria Melania Mutermilch (1876 – 1967)

Maria Melania Mutermilch.

Lot 166. MUTER Mela (1876 / 1967). Paris, le Pont neuf, circa 1925 / 1930. Oil on canvas signed lower left. 60 x 71 cm. We thank Mrs Urszula Lazowski for confirming the authenticity of this painting. Estimate 25,000 – 35,000 euro. Boisgirard. 11/27/20

Cytuję calośc listu i dziękuję:

Dear Mrs. Führer-Breuer

This was of course a misunderstanding in my previous email ; the landscape you are presenting on Nov. 29 is a first class Muter and it will certainly fetch a very good price.
Concerning « Île Saint Louis » the answer is not simple, but I share your doubts as there are several elements which tend to not confirm its authenticity.
First of all, we know no Winter landscapes painted by the artist.
Very thin layer of paint on the ungrounded fine linen canvas does not seem to correspond to her technique. It looks a little like a sketch for an unfinished work.
And of course it misses the usual display of colours, which makes Muter’s painting so living and vibrating. There is something static and liveless in this composition.
The signature – rather easy to falsify – is usually written with larger strokes of brush.
The size does not correspond to the French standard system of stretcher dimensions, but here we find some other examples of it in the artist’s work.

To sum things up, I do not feel this painting has been created by Mela Muter.

Yours sincerely,

Christophe Zagrodzki
